{"id":1055,"date":"2015-05-16T16:10:00","date_gmt":"2015-05-16T20:10:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.thetigerfanforum.com\/news\/2015\/05\/16\/clemson-advances-to-ncaa-national-tournament\/"},"modified":"2015-05-16T16:10:00","modified_gmt":"2015-05-16T20:10:00","slug":"clemson-advances-to-ncaa-national-tournament","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"http:\/\/www.thetigerfanforum.com\/news\/2015\/05\/16\/clemson-advances-to-ncaa-national-tournament\/","title":{"rendered":"Clemson Advances to NCAA National Tournament"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Chapel Hill, N.C.\u2014North Carolina native Miller Capps fired a three-under-par 69 on Saturday to lead Clemson to a fifth-place finish at the NCAA Chapel Hill Regional at the Finley Golf Course on the University of North Carolina Campus.\u00a0 With the top five finish in the 13-team regional, Clemson advances to the NCAA Championship Tournament in Bradenton, Fla on May 29.<\/p>\n<p>Clemson finished Saturday\u2019s round with a team score of 284, four-under par on the par 72 Finley Golf Course that was redesigned in Tom Fazio in 1999.\u00a0 Clemson finished with a 54-hole \u00a0team score of 859, seven shots ahead of sixth-place KennesawState.\u00a0 Other teams advancing were Charlotte (845), Stanford (850), FloridaState (853) and Florida (855).\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>Clemson was tied for sixth place with host school North Carolina and was two strokes behind fourth place teams KennesawState and Florida entering Saturday\u2019s final round.\u00a0 But the Tigers scored 11 strokes better than North Carolina and nine strokes better than KennesawState to clinch the final spot in the standings.<\/p>\n<p>It is the first time since 2010 that Clemson has advanced to the NCAA National Tournament.\u00a0 That team, led by current PGA tour player Ben Martin, finished 16<sup>th<\/sup> at the NCAA Tournament in Chattanooga.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI slept well last night, I really did,\u201d said Clemson Head Coach Larry Penley.\u00a0 \u201cI liked out team\u2019s attitude last night and I really believed we would play well.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was a test of our team\u2019s character and we have been a team of strong character all year.\u00a0 We showed that at the ACC Tournament when we made up a five-shot deficit over the last two holes to force a playoff.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Clemson got off to a good start on Saturday, from the very first player in fact, as Miller Capps made a birdie on the first hole played by any Tiger.\u00a0 \u201cIt was important that we get off to a good start,\u201d continued Penley.\u00a0 \u201cWe played the front side first and I was glad to see that because it gave us a chance to make some birdies and put some pressure on the other teams in contention for the cutline.\u201d\u00a0 North Carolina had to play the back nine first and was four over part early in their round.<\/p>\n<p>All five Clemson players were contributing and the Tigers shot eight-under-par for the front nine.\u00a0\u00a0 Clemson\u2019s five players combined to make 12 birdies.\u00a0 The Tigers went to the back nine with a six shot lead over KennesawState for the last spot and were 12 shots ahead of North Carolina.<\/p>\n<p>Clemson continued to hold a 6-10 shot advantage over KennesawState for the final slot the rest of the round.<\/p>\n<p>A key stretch was the 15<sup>th<\/sup> and 16<sup>th<\/sup> holes, where Clemson had struggled on Friday.\u00a0 Clemson played those two holes at six-over-par on Friday, but shot even par on Saturday.\u00a0 That six shot difference was important.\u00a0 \u201cWe even got a couple of birdies on those holes and that was big.\u00a0 We kept the lead at the same margin and allowed us to relax over the last couple of holes.<\/p>\n<p>It was the top NCAA Tournament round for Capps, a native of Denver, N.C. who had never broken par in eight previous NCAA Tournament rounds.\u00a0 \u201cI hit the ball better from tee to green and made a couple of putts today,\u201d said Capps, who leads the Clemson team in birdies this year with 135, six of whom came on Saturday.\u00a0 \u201cBeing from nearby, it was very important for me personally to advance through this regional.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Capps best birdie came on the 16<sup>th<\/sup> hole when he made a 12 footer on the hole that played the most difficult for the week.\u00a0 \u201cThat was an especially big birdie considering how we had struggled on that hole all week,\u201d said Penley.\u00a0<\/p>\n<p>While Capps was the top player on Saturday, Austin Langdale and Billy Kennerly were the top Clemson players for the course of the weekend.\u00a0 Langdale finished with a 71 on Saturday and had a 211 total for his 54 holes, good enough for seventh place.\u00a0 Kennerly finished with a 72 on Saturday and a 213 score for the weekend, good enough for ninth place.<\/p>\n<p>This marks the first time since 2003 that Clemson has had two players finish in the top 10 of an NCAA Regional.\u00a0 That year Gregg Jones, Matt Hendrix and D.J. Trahan all finished in the top 10 at the NCAA Regional.<\/p>\n<p>Stephen Behr and Cody Proveaux also contributed to Clemson\u2019s performance on Saturday.\u00a0 Both players had even par rounds of 72.\u00a0 Behr made a chip in from 70 feet on the par three 12<sup>th<\/sup> hole for a birdie.\u00a0 Proveaux played the last six holes at two under par, including a birdie on the 469 yard par four 15<sup>th<\/sup> hole.<\/p>\n<p>All five Clemson players shot par or better on Saturday, the first time a Clemson team had done that in a regional since May 17, 2001 at the Green Course in Williamsburg, Va.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI said yesterday that it is important to have all five players in the game, especially in the final round,\u201d said Penley.\u00a0 \u201cWe had that today, in fact all five players shot par or better.
