He can line up at a tight end. He can line up at an H-back,” Gentry said. “We can move him around without having to bring extra personnel onto the field. I like my chances with a 6-4 receiver on a little corner out there.”
Register will also spend time on defense, but he prefers to play offense.
“I can run routes, I have the mobility to do that, but I also like the blocking aspect,” Register said. “I like blocking the guy. I like that feeling of pancaking someone. I like being physical.”
Brent Venables thinks Register has a future on his side of the ball.
“When coach Venables recruited this area, of course he liked him on defense. ‘That boy is going to have his hand down,’ he said…some people see the upside as a tight end/H-back,” Gentry said. “Some people see him as a defensive end. For us, our defensive end is a true outside linebacker, which he comes up on the line of scrimmage, kind of an old 50-style defensive end, so he’s standing up.”
Several college coaches will get an in-person look at Register this summer when he hits the camp circuit. He plans to hit Clemson, South Carolina, Georgia, Tennessee, Florida and Virginia Tech.
“Clemson and South Carolina are both showing a lot of interest. This summer, with his camping, it will be very important to him,” Gentry said.
For now, Charlotte is his only offer. The 49ers dropped that off when a coach was by Chapin earlier in the month.
“It was definitely a fun time, just seeing everything starting to pay off. It was fun,” Register said.
More are certain to follow.
“He’s looked great this spring. He’s going to be a dominant player for us,” Gentry said. “I haven’t coached somebody as dominating for a while. I’m looking forward to it.
