Clemson head basketball coach Brad Brownell recently jumped into the mix for Lindy Waters III when he extended an offer to the 6-foot-6 shooting guard from Norman, Oklahoma.
\nWaters, who averaged 16.4 points, 7.3 rebounds and 2.1 steals per game as a junior at North High School, has offers from Butler, Cincinnati, Iowa State, Oklahoma and Oklahoma State.
\nClemson offered on Monday.
\n\u201cIt\u2019s a high academic school,\u201d his father told TheClemsonInsider.com, during an interview earlier this week.
\n\u201cAnd it\u2019s a school that has the opportunity to play some of the other top schools in the ACC,\u201d Waters Jr. said. \u201cIt\u2019s a top conference and that\u2019s what he\u2019s looking for, just an opportunity to get a good education and play against some good competition.\u201d
\nThe younger Waters said Brownell was in contact with his dad prior to the offer.
\n\u201cBefore that, one of my dad\u2019s good friends, he used to coach there and he\u2019s real good friends with the coaching staff,\u201d Waters said. \u201cSo he told my dad first and my dad told me. Then, about an hour later, that\u2019s when the coach called.\u201d
\nWord of the offer caught him off guard.
\n\u201cI wasn\u2019t really expecting them at all,\u201d he said.
\nThere\u2019s still some research to be done about the school and its basketball program.
\n\u201cI know they\u2019re in the ACC and they\u2019re a good school, but I don\u2019t know much about them,\u201d Waters said.
\nWaters is going to wait and see what happens during the July evaluation period before settling on any visits.
\n\u201cAs of right now, we are planning to take our visits in August and September,\u201d he said.
\nThey will be officials.
\n\u201cI\u2019m looking for a place that has a good culture and good basketball program, along with great academics,\u201d Waters said.
\nAccording to Rivals, Waters is the No. 137 overall player in the class of 2016.<\/p>\n
