Between timely hitting with runners in scoring position and solid pitching from relievers Alex Bostic and Taylor Vetzel, the baseball team came out victorious over No. 19 College of Charleston.
One day after a devastating 17-9 loss at Wofford, the baseball team rebounded for a nice 6-3 victory over No. 19 College of Charleston, snapping the Cougars’ eight game win streak. The Tigers improved to 25-24 overall, while College of Charleston fell to 35-10 on the year.
Clemson broke a scoreless tie in the third inning after Eli White, who went 3-for-4 with two runs scored, was hit by a pitch and then Steven Duggar singled, one of his two RBIs, to bring White home. The Tigers then added another run in the fourth with an RBI single off the bat of Tyler Slaton. College of Charleston’s Bradley Jones went on to tie the game 2-2 with a two-run shot in the top of the fifth, but the Tigers responded with three runs in the bottom of the frame to take the lead for good.
In the fifth, Robert Jolly, earning his first start of the year at DH, started the rally with a leadoff double that was followed by a single from White and an ensuing RBI double from Duggar. White then scored on a groundout by Tyler Krieger, and Duggar came home on an RBI from Reed Rohlman.
“We played a complete game today, from top to bottom,” Duggar said.
College of Charleston posed a major threat in the seventh inning, loading the bases with no outs, but Alex Bostic came on in relief and proceeded to strike out the first two batters and get the third to fly out to Duggar. Bostic’s dominant performance was a rather welcome sight from a bullpen that has been struggling all year.
The Tigers added one more run in the eighth, as Slaton scored on a sacrifice fly from Glenn Batson after leading off the inning with a double and advancing to third on a balk.
Tiger starter Clate Schmidt (2-3) earned the win by allowing only four hits, two runs and one walk with four strikeouts in his 5.0 innings pitched.

“Guys on the offensive side have been doing really well the past couple games, and [the pitching staff hasn’t] really backed them up like we should have, and it was good to be able to give them some support tonight and be able to show that we still have it and we’re ready to help them out in any way we can,” Schmidt said. “I’ve kind of had some success as a starter, and I think, for me, it’s just kind of a mentality of ‘I can set the pace for an entire game’ and just trying to set up whatever I can for the team to do the best that they can.”
Taylor Vetzel came in during the ninth inning to relieve Bostic, pitching the final 0.2 innings and getting his second save of the season.
“It’s about being consistent,” Duggar said. “If we play a complete game, from top to bottom, we’re pretty dangerous. I think that if our pitching staff comes out and does what they did tonight, and offensively, we stay within ourselves and do what we’ve done for the past few games, we’re pretty dangerous. It’s just trying to find that consistency night in and night out.”
