Georgia Southern at Clemson Series Preview

Clemson enters this weekend’s series versus the Eagles at 25-24 (13-13)
A few weeks ago it looks like the Tigers had turned the corner, as they won ACC series against UNC, BC, and Duke consecutively. It either gave you hope or scared you half to death thinking that they’d do just well enough to avoid making changes (i.e., improvements) after the season. Of course, as competition level improved, Clemson lost to Georgia and then another mid-week head scratcher, this time to Charleston Southern before dropping back-to-back ACC series to Georgia Tech and Louisville.
This week presented yet another ridiculous loss, as the Tigers fell 9-17 to Wofford. With that loss, Clemson has now dropped games to six different teams within the state of South Carolina (South Carolina, Winthrop, Coastal Carolina, Presbyterian, Charleston Southern, Wofford). Who knew there were even that many other baseball teams in little South Carolina? Oh, and Furman still looms!
Now they’re just a game over .500 and all but out of tournament contention. With that said, we’re open to your nominations for coaching profile articles. If you’d like to learn about a possible baseball coach just post it in the comments and we’ll add it to our running list for staff writers to sign-up for.
Now, on to the task at hand. Georgia Southern enters this weekend’s series at 27-21, and while their record is stronger than Clemson’s their schedule is rather weak. They do have an impressive three game sweep of Georgia, to their credit.
The Eagles have some pop, as they’ve hit 41 home runs this season compared to just 27 for Clemson. Their team ERA is 4.17 while Clemson’s is a tick below at 3.95.
Clemson sends Crownover to the mound on Friday as he seeks to continue to boosting his draft stock. Hopefully he can have yet another dazzling performance and continue to climb on scouts’ draft boards. GSU has their own ace on Friday’s in Evan Challenger who boasts a 1.11 ERA. Friday should be a battle of aces.
Another interesting note. Clemson had no player with more than two saves in their bullpen. It’s always nice to have a clear closer or at least a dominant reliever to turn to. GSU’s Chris Brown has 10 saves, however his ERA is a not so impressive 5.97. It looks like each team has found a different way to lose games late. We’ll see who avoids that fate this weekend.
