Clemson Adds Transfer Marcquise Reed

Clemson’s basketball team picked up another transfer commitment on Monday, this one from former Robert Morris guard Marcquise Reed.
Former Robert Morris guard and NEC freshman of the year Marcquise Reed announced Monday afternoon via his Twitter account that he intends to transfer to Clemson.
This is a quality addition for a Clemson team that has struggled to score and, more specifically, make outside shots. Reed will have to sit out a year, but he should be an immediate contributor when the 2016-2017 season rolls around. While adding a player who could play this season was a possibility, it seemed that ship had sailed when Clemson missed out on Alabama transfer Ricky Tarrant. Considering that, it is a good move for the Tigers to add a player of Reed’s caliber that has three years of eligibility remaining.
As a freshman for the Colonials, Reed scored 15.1 points per game while tacking on 2.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds. He got it done on the defensive end as well, ranking 27th nationally in Stl%. He shot 49% from the floor, including better than 41% from three.
Reed is a guy who doesn’t look like much walking onto the court, but he really knows how to play. He is a crafty scorer off the dribble and obviously can knock down threes without having to shoot a high volume. Clemson fans may remember him lighting up the Tigers for 21 points in late December, but he also scored 24 against North Carolina and 22 against eventual national champion Duke in the NCAA Tournament. When bringing in somebody from a smaller school, it’s nice to have concrete evidence that he can perform against high-major competition, and it appears that Reed was often at his best in those matchups.
It seems like he was under-recruited out of Upper Marlboro, Md., and he still didn’t garner as much attention as a transfer as you would expect based on his play. Clemson is arguably the best program that has courted him, but make no mistake, this is a solid pickup for the Tigers.
