Clemson Football: Deshaun Watson’s Heisman Hopes

Clemson Tiger quarter back Deshaun Watson has hopes to not only take Clemson to the ”promise land” in the upcoming seasons, but also win the most prestigious award in all of College Football.

In an interview conducted last week, Watson was asked about his hopes of winning the Heisman Trophy:

“That’s one of my goals and one of my dreams, to win the Heisman,” Watson said. “I’m not going to look at the board. I’m going to take it one day, one game at a time and just go out there and play.”

With that being said, what needs to be done in order for Deshaun Watson to win the Heisman Trophy? Obviously things have to fall into place with other teams and players from around the nation, but let’s look at just a few things that can help keep him in the discussion and put him atop the “Heisman Watch” board.

One of the first steps in Watson winning the Heisman will be remaining healthy and leading Clemson to a solid season. He certainly has the talent to do so. The main “set-back” people have had with Watson is the question, can he stay healthy? In the span of just two seasons, Deshaun Watson has torn his ACL, broken his finger, and broken his collar-bone. Many want to point to those injuries and claim he will never be healthy enough to play a full season, but I believe the conditioning and off-season work he is doing right now will be key to him staying healthy this season. You and I both know that the Clemson Coaching Staff must also cut back on some of the quarter back runs on 3rd and 1, or 3rd and 2, and instead give it to a powerful running back, such as Wayne Gallman, Tyshon Dye, or Zac Brooks.

Another key to Watson’s Heisman hopes is leading Clemson to a stellar season. The trend that is being set for the Heisman Trophy the past few years is the “best quarter back on the best team” automatically gets a shot at the Heisman. If Clemson has a good season, this will only increase Deshaun’s Heisman chances. It also will help that he will have performances over teams such as Notre Dame, Florida State, Georgia Tech, and even Louisville. It’s all about style for some national pundits and when Clemson is in the lime-light of national coverage, Deshaun needs to perform at a high level.

As a Freshman, Deshaun Watson threw for 1,466 yards and 14 touchdown passes to only two interceptions. He had a total QB Rating of 188.6 and also rushed for five touchdowns in just eight games. In addition to the impressive stats, it just seemed like Clemson’s offense was a totally different team when he was on the field. Everyone just seemed more confident and “loose” when he was on the field. That natural leadership and charisma is another huge plus for being a Heisman hopeful.

If he can play a full season in 2015 and continue to display his physical ability, as well as show what kind of leader he is on and off the field, Deshaun Watson can bring the Heisman Trophy to Clemson University this year. Watson is special and most Tiger fans realized that early last year. His natural talent and ability is what gives him the chance, but his confidence and leadership is what will have Clemson fans saying “Heisman Trophy Winner” next to his name.

What do you think, Clemson fans, can Deshaun Watson bring home the Heisman Trophy this season? What do you think his chances are?
