DURHAM, NC – TCI takes a look back at Day Two of the ACC Baseball Championship at Durham Bulls Athletic Park.
#6 NC State 3, #3 Notre Dame 0
The Wolfpack scored two runs in the top of the first inning and added another run in the second to give their pitching staff all the support they would need as they won for the 11th time in their last 13 games. NC State starter Brian Brown and reliever Curt Britt combined to throw a three-hit shutout (all infield hits) while striking out 14 Irish batters. Notre Dame, making their first ever appearance in the ACC Baseball Championship, had a chance in the second as they loaded the bases with only one out but back-to-back strikeouts ended the threat as the game turned into a pitcher’s duel the rest of the way.
#5 Clemson 7, #1 Louisville 2
The Tigers jumped on Cardinal starter Kyle Funkhouser early with five runs over the first two innings and never looked back as Zack Erwin kept the Louisville offense at bay. Erwin picked up his seventh win of the season after allowing a single run on six hits with no walks and 11 strikeouts in 8.0 innings while Clemson beat Funkhouser for the second time this season. Seven different Tigers had a hit in Clemson’s 10-hit attack, including four for extra bases, while Nick Solak had three of the Cardinals seven hits.
#2 Florida State 8, #8 North Carolina 4
The Seminoles jumped out to a 5-0 lead with a run in the first inning, second inning, two in the fifth inning, and one in the sixth while starter Mike Compton retired the first 11 Tar Heels he faced. North Carolina cut the lead to 5-2 in the sixth but Florida State added three in the top of the eighth to push the lead back to 8-2. The Tar Heels mounted a rally in the ninth as they scored two runs, but were unable to complete the comeback as the Seminoles improved to 2-0 in Durham. With this result, both North Carolina and Clemson were eliminated from championship contention while setting up a winner-take-all contest between Florida State and Louisville on Saturday morning.
