The Inside Word: Defensive End

With the loss of Ebenezer Ogundeko and multiple personnel losses off of last season’s No. 1-ranked defense, defensive end is a position to keep an eye on at Clemson in 2015.

According to contacts within the Tigers program, here’s how it’s expected to shake out from a depth chart standpoint and a few inside tidbits on the position.

Depth Chart

Strongside DE

Kevin Dodd, Jr.
Martin Aiken, Jr.
Austin Bryant, Fr.

Weakside DE

Shaq Lawson, Soph.
Richard Yeargin, RFr.
Chris Register, RFr.
Clelin Ferrell, Fr.
LaSamuel Davis, Fr.

-With Ogundeko leaving, the Clemson staff feels it is going to have to play young guys early – that means possibly Christian Wilkins (as a defensive tackle), Ferrell, Bryant and Yeargin (not Register) behind solid two starters – Lawson and Dodd – and Aiken.

Incoming

-On the recruiting front, Clemson’s staff is planning on getting four-star defensive end Xavier Kelly on campus this summer. Kelly is from Kansas, but has family lives in Savannah.

– Clemson is also in the game for Brian Burns from south Florida and three from Georgia: Jordan Smith, Antonneous Clayton and Malik Walker.

-Clayton is more of an Auburn, Florida, Miss State & Ole Miss deal at this point.

-In 2016, the Clemson staff is planning on taking one DE and one DT (very likely Nyles Pinckney).

-As an oversign- the staff feels No. 1 prospect in the country Rashan Gary could play defensive end for the Tigers given his freaky athletic skills.
