Xavier Thomas is the early leader for billing as the top prospect in South Carolina’s class of 2018.
The 6-foot-3, 235-pound rising sophomore could also be in the conversation as the country’s best player.
On Tuesday, before wrapping up his visit for the Dabo Swinney Football Camp, Thomas was offered by Clemson.
“Coach (Marion) Hobby talked to me after the second practice and told me. And then the defensive coordinator (Brent Venables) talked with me. (Venables) kept talking about the positives and how Clemson is a home and a family and I would love it here and how much they want me,” Thomas said, during a Tuesday night interview with TheClemsonInsider.
“And I really loved the environment and coaches and just the pride they have.”
Thomas also lists offers from Florida State, Georgia, Nebraska and Tennessee. Growing up, he was a South Carolina fan.
“I grew up despising Clemson, period…but that has definitely changed after today with the experience I had, ” he said.
Plenty stood out.
“I love it because everyone supports Clemson, I mean everywhere I went I saw orange or either a paw or tiger or something that represents the pride they have for Clemson,” Thomas said. “My mother felt at home and very welcomed while being taught by the coaches.”
He added, “I know the tradition and I felt honored (that) maybe one day I will be running down that hill with a Clemson uniform on.”
In July, Thomas will camp at South Carolina, Tennessee and Florida State. The trip to Tallahassee is for a three-day camp, while the Knoxville and Columbia trips will be one-day.
