Clemson Baseball: Tigers drop game to UNC

The Clemson baseball team faced the North Carolina Tar Heels in the final ACC Tournament game of Pool A play.

After an impressive win over the number-three ranked Louisville Cardinals on Thursday, the Clemson Tigers fell short Friday afternoon when they played the North Carolina Tar Heels. The Tar Heels got out to a 3-0 lead in the third inning after the Tigers committed a two-out inning-extending error led to a three-run home run. North Carolina would tack on two more runs in the fourth to take a 5-0 lead over Clemson.

The Tigers attempted to make a late rally in the sixth inning, when they score two runs, but could never get the critical hits needed to truly mount any type of comeback. Clemson cut the lead in half when Weston Wilson hit an RBI single in the eighth, but could not get anything else going and that’s where the game ended, with a final score of 6-3. The Tigers committed a total of four errors in the field, which led to several runs for the Tar Heels.

“They took advantage of the opportunities we gave them in the third and fourth inning,” said head coach Jack Leggett. “And they made their hits count. They played well and a little better than we did, via Clemson Athletic Communications. “We were a little shaky defensively and gave them too many opportunities, and a good team will take advantage of it. But our guys battled out there. We got ourselves back in a situation where we had some opportunities at the end.”

Clemson will need several teams to lose in order to have a chance at an at-large bid in the NCAA Tournament. When the Tigers are on their game, they can play with some of the best in the country. If Clemson does get a shot as an at-large bid, the Tigers must play how they did in the Florida State series or against Louisville, combining strong offense with consistent defense and good pitching each game.

The NCAA Tournament Selection Show will begin at noon on Monday.
