CLEMSON – The Clemson baseball team survived the bubble on Monday afternoon and was selected for the NCAA tournament for 40th time. It is the 21st time in the last 22 seasons that Jack Leggett has led the Tigers to the tournament as head coach.
The Tigers, 32-27, will be the No. 3 seed in the Fullerton (CA) Regional, and will face No. 2 seed Arizona St (34-21) on Friday at 6 p.m.
Fullerton Regional1 Cal St Fullerton (34-22)4 Pepperdine (30-27)
3 Clemson (32-27)2 Arizona St (34-21)
Clemson entered the ACC Tournament needing at least one more landmark win to feel good about receiving a berth and got that with a 7-2 win over No. 3 Louisville last Thursday. However, four errors and eight walks led to a 6-3 loss to UNC Friday and many thought that UNC would battle Clemson for the last ACC team to get into the tourney.
The host team and No. 1 seed is Cal St. Fullerton. Fullerton finished the season with a three-game sweep of Long Beach at Goodwin Field and had a 34-22 overall record, 19-5 in the Big West.
It was the 28th conference title in school history and 20th in the Big West. Fullerton won six straight to finish the season and did not lose a single series during Big West play and recorded three sweeps.
The winner of the Cal Fullerton Regional plays the winner of the Louisville Regional.
