Tyshon Dye could have a breakout year for Clemson.
Clemson heads in to the 2015 season with the most depth it has had at running back in quite some time. In fact, it’s deeper than you think.
Here’s a look at four of the major players for the Tigers at the position.
1- Wayne Gallman finished 2014 with 769 yards rushing. He made South Carolina his coming out party rushing 27 times for 191 yards, a touchdown and it looked like he could’ve ran the ball for 100 more during that 35-17 win. Gallman has kept his head down and grinded ever since he arrived at Clemson. Expect more of the same in 2015. Gallman has packed on on more muscle this offseason and could be the biggest of the Tigers backs at weigh in in August. Gallman is one of two candidates I think that could be the 1,000 yard back for Clemson this season.
2- Tyshon Dye got healthy late last season and gave us glimpses of the running back Clemson recruited. Dye was turned loose late in the season against Georgia State where he had 20 carries, 124 yards and two touchdowns. Dye is the big smashing back you like to have in the second half to wear down a defense. There could be a battle in fall camp between Gallman and Dye for touches this fall. Dye holds one slight intangible advantage with the “good hands” out of the backfield.
3- Adam Choice will return to duty this fall after knee surgery. Choice was running well in spring ball and appears on track for full recovery. Choice is the change of pace back that can do it all. He’s probably the most athletic of all the Tiger backs as well.
4- C.J. Davidson is the speedster of the group. Davidson can put a lot pressure on opponents defenses with his speed and footwork. He’s added some muscle and is now over 200 pounds. Don’t be surprised if you see him used in the screen game or even perhaps on a wheel route. Davidson caused Georgia issues in the first half of the 2014 season opener and then the Tigers went away from him. Davidson is awkward to tackle and gets through small spaces quickly. He my pick to have one of those best “12th man” type years for the Tigers.
