CHARLOTTE – Stephen Davis Jr.’s contact with Clemson slowed down dramatically when he committed to Auburn.
Davis told TheClemsonInsider last Saturday that things have picked back up since he visited Clemson for the Orange and White game.
“We’ve been keeping in touch a lot since then,” he said. “We just go back and forth, talking with each other. Seeing what I can do, to get back up there and watch a game.”
The 6-foot-4, 215-pound safety was impressed with what he experienced while on campus for the first time in April.
“The Clemson spring game was live. I really had fun at the Clemson spring game. I’m just imagining what a real game is like,” Davis said.
Clemson offered in October of his sophomore year and maintained contact until the commitment to Auburn was made last August.
For Davis, the instate Tigers have plenty of intrigue. He’s taken notice of defensive coordinator Brent Venables and the rest of the staff that’s been assembled by head coach Dabo Swinney.
“The defense, I like the way they run their defense,” Davis said. “The coaching is just coaching that you’ve never seen before.
“I know everybody talks about Auburn’s defensive coaching staff, but Clemson has a pretty good coaching staff, too. Coach Venables is a nice defensive coordinator.”
Clemson isn’t the only non-Auburn factor in Davis’ recruitment. Florida State and UCLA were also mentioned as schools that will also receive consideration.
His father played running back at Auburn before going on to an 11-year NFL career.
“He just tells me to stay humble, to keep working and competing, having fun and enjoying the recruiting process,” Davis said. “You only get this once and you’ve just got to live it up. I’m just having fun with it.”
As a junior, Davis had 60 tackles.
