Clemson Baseball: Tigers drop game one to Seminoles

The Clemson baseball team opened up Pool A play at 11 a.m. Wednesday morning and were unable to get anything going as they lost to the Florida State Seminoles, 3-1.

DJ Stewart hit a two-out, two-run triple in the bottom of the third to give Florida State a 2-0 lead. Quincy Nieporte then scored Stewart from third on an RBI single to take a 3 run lead into the fourth. Other than that one inning, Matthew Crownover had a solid outing, pitching seven innings and striking out eight batters in the loss.

The Tigers had chances in both the top of the seventh and the eighth inning when they ran the bases loaded with only one out. Unfortunately, in the top of the seventh, Glenn Batson hit into an inning-ending double-play. In the top of the eighth, Chris Okey’s ground-out scored a run from third to cut the lead to two runs, but could not get anything else going. Clemson had runners on first and second in the ninth with two-outs, but Steven Duggar struck out swinging to give Florida State the win.

For the Seminoles, Boomer Bieglaski pitched 6.1 innings and only allowed four Tiger hits, and no runs in his time on the mound.

With the loss, Clemson dropped to 0-1 in Pool A and the Tigers will become fans of North Carolina and Louisville to defeat Florida State on Thursday and Saturday. Clemson will resume ACC Tournament Play on Thursday when they play the number-one seeded Louisville Cardinals at 3 p.m. This is a must-win game for the Tigers, who hope to still advance to the ACC Championship Game, as well as keep their NCAA Tournament hopes alive.
